Kawaii Eider

Kawaii Eider is the mascot of an NY- firm run by two garment industry students, the other of whom is me. Kawaii Eider offers clothes and outfits of alternate fashion, and its products are suited to Japanese street fashion.

The mascot bird is an eider (which you can probably tell from its name) with a shiny golden crown on its head. The black, white and gray parts have all been made of cottoned yarn. The origins of the golden yarn are unknown.

Designing and creating of this amigurumi wasn't all that bad, but when I got to the making of the crown, the work suddenly got more difficult. The yarn was slippery and very challenging to deal with. The shape of the painstakingly elaborate crown had to be maintained somehow and so I starched it with sugar. I've never done anything like this before but it's a great way to bring out the form of lace for example. This exact same way you can even make bowls out of old doilies.

Sugar starching:
Mon Amigurumi
  • bring 1 dl of sugar and 1 dl of water to a boil.
  • Wet the doily in the water first and then soak it in the starch blend for a moment.
  • If you want to make your work to resemble a bowl, get a bowl of preferred size and put some plastic wrap on it. Then put the work on the bowl. (though make sure first that you've squeezed it out of all the excessive sugar blend).
  • The plastic wrap is used in order to keep the bowl from sticking to the work.
  • Leave the starched work to dry at least for two days... Preferably longer
